About

Malin Pierre is a Swedish glass artist born in 1977. She grew up in Jämtland and is based in Stockholm, where she maintains her studio in Gustavsberg. Before focusing on her artistic practice, she worked as a freelance set designer for film and television.
She studied in the Department of Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, earning her bachelor’s degree in 2021 and her master’s degree in 2023. During her studies, she began using sewn textiles as models for her glass sculptures, a technique that remains central to her practice.
Artist statement
Each of my blown-glass sculptures begins with an original textile form, which I hand-sew and stuff until it acquires volume and a sense of air. I take a plaster mould of the textile and blow glass into the heated mould. Once the glass has cooled, I break away the plaster, revealing a surface that preserves every seam, fold and fibre of the fabric.
My grandmother taught me to sew, weave, knit and crochet when I was a child, and I have been collecting fabrics and yarns ever since.
My practice is driven by intuition and experimentation, and by a fascination with the appearance and behaviour of materials, their weight, their surfaces, and the moment when something soft becomes hard. Haute couture is a recurring reference in my work, as is the transformation of pliable fabric into glass, a material that is both rigid and fragile.
Glass exists in a state of in-betweenness. An amorphous solid, it occupies a space between the liquid and the solid, and I want my sculptures to embody this sense of uncertainty. I think of them as glass that remembers the fabric from which it was formed.
