Närmare 1:9 takes its starting point in a forest holding in Jämtland, Sweden, that I have inherited. To inherit a forest is to receive something that extends far beyond one’s own lifetime: a place, a landscape and a responsibility that has been cared for by previous generations and is now to be passed on.

Three tall light-wood frames on a whitewashed gallery wall, each scattered with translucent glass shapes in black, grey, amber, peach, pink and cream, with a window at left.

The work explores the relationship between people and the forest, and what it means to care for something that is both material and living. The forest can be understood as a resource, but also as an ecosystem with its own sense of time and its own processes. A tension emerges between these perspectives.

Through the work, I approach questions of inheritance and responsibility: what does it mean to receive something that we may also need to change, care for, or leave untouched? Närmare 1:9 is an attempt to move closer to this place and to the questions that come with it.
